Information on Project
Countywide Project Leader:
**Poultry News**, Effective January 16, 2019 **
There has been a California outbreak of the Newcastle Disease. It is currently recommended that all events where poultry gather, to be canceled at this time.
Our 4-H office is working closely with the authorities and our Kings County Fair to make a decision on whether the poultry show will be allowed to continue within our county at the Kings County 4-H Fair or the Kings County Fair. We will keep you updated on the decision once it is made.
**It is recommended from the 4-H Office to not transport or have your poultry come in contact with any poultry that is currently not kept with our current flock. Be sure to keep accurate records of when your bird(s) were purchased and where the bird was purchased from (location along with breeder).
Be sure to contact a veterinarian if you notice your bird showing any signs of different behavior or an illness.
Here is a copy of original letter that went out: To view the letter, please visit: https://www.cdfa.ca.gov/ahfss/Animal_Health/pdfs/RecommendCancellationPoultryExhibitions.pdf
?I will leave it up to the 4-H project leaders to determine how they will continue and conduct future project meetings.
Statement from Dr. Annette Jones, CDFA State Veterinarian, regarding Virulent Newcastle Disease:
January 16, 2019
Recommendation to Cancel California Poultry Exhibitions That Include Birds From Counties Affected With
Virulent Newcastle Disease
Since May 2018, an outbreak of virulent Newcastle disease (VND) has had a devastating impact on backyard bird populations in four Southern California counties: Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura. The virus has also been found in three commercial facilities in Riverside County. As a result, nearly 500,000 backyard and commercial birds have been euthanized.
To support our disease containment and eradication efforts, the California State Veterinarian is recommending that all poultry exhibitions that include birds from high-risk counties (Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura) be canceled.
An exhibition is an assembly of birds (including but not limited to poultry) brought to the assembly location for purposes that include public display for any duration. For example, exhibitions include, but are not limited to: auctions, shows, swap meets, pet marts, fair exhibits, pigeon races, cock fights, pet stores, and petting zoos.
